2021.12.05 18:33 Murky_Historian_1688 Public Health is ROUGH ya'll

Background: Along with doctors/nurses and other essential workers there are thousands of people who work in public health on covid right now. In the U.S. pretty much every county has a public health department where is it our job to protect people from disease and other negative health consequences. Generally, people work on a specific health issue like tobacco prevention, maternal health, STDs, etc. If you didn’t know much about public health workers, no worries, our unofficial slogan is: If we’re doing our job right, no one will know we did it :).
In my county (and prob others) we're classified as Disaster Service Workers, so during a disaster or community health crisis we stop normal job duties and respond to the crisis. This usually happens when there is short term crisis like a wildfire or measles outbreak in the community. When we’re hired, we’re told that during an emergency you might get called on to help…but you will NEVER be asked to do something that would be considered far outside of your normal job duties.
Story: Since the pandemic started, myself and my colleagues have been forced to stop all normal job duties, focusing solely on the pandemic for the last 22 months. When it started and we were initiating the Disaster Operation Center and figuring out new job duties, all staff were told they could only take vacation time if it was approved by the Public Health director, not our normal supervisors. That lasted for a year and made it feel like you shouldn’t take any time off.
We were forced into any job that leadership created and wanted us to serve in. They made it clear that quitting our jobs was the only way to not have to work on the pandemic. Some people have been working here for years/decades and had to quit because they weren’t allowed to do their normal job and covid was too stressful. People who applied for lateral transfers or promotions outside the pandemic (in different departments) were told that they couldn’t take the position because they were needed on covid.
The work became so extensive that it was common for staff to work 60 hours a week without coming anywhere near finishing the work, it was endless and all consuming. Staff were forced to man the call center and get yelled at by angry community members for 8+ hours a day, 40+ hours a week, often leaving in tears.
Staff were forced to take on supervisor roles with no training. My normal job position is Analyst, but I was forced to supervise 7 people, some of which were supervisors themselves which put me at least 2 levels up from my normal work. I was not paid any extra money (i.e. fair compensation for working out of class) to do this, none of us were. No hazard pay for going out into the field (sometimes w/o proper safety gear), no raises for doing a good job or taking on extra responsibilities.
Even with all that, it would have been manageable if we had been supported by leadership or given mental health supports throughout. Obviously, none of that happened. The position that I was placed in not only had to supervise without training, but I (and my team) also had to advise facilities housing most vulnerable people (jail, nursing homes, schools, etc) on how to keep their residents safe. We investigated outbreaks. Once we even had to track down a dead body. These being life or death situations, we expected to be able to ask questions to trained medical leadership who just dismissed them and blamed us when things went wrong. The amount of gaslighting and exploitation we experienced was disgusting.
We do have a union and have been working with them the whole time, but to no avail. We’ve made the argument that working out of class demands proper pay, but because these covid positions didn’t exist before the pandemic the County has found a loophole allowing them to not pay us anything extra. Apparently if the position didn’t exist already, it can’t be considered “out of class.” I’ve asked the union to get their lawyer involved, but our union is barely fighting this for us. All they have done is write a letter and had a couple sit down meetings with a couple different layers of leadership.
I’m so burnt out I’ve become severely depressed and have medical issues. A lot of us have. Of course I want to quit more than anything, but I think the PTSD from this experience is affecting my cognitive abilities, I’m having a hard time remembering things and my brain seems to be working a little slower than normal. Basically I don’t feel like I have the energy to apply or the skills to crush an interview right now. Let this be a cautionary tale, never let anyone treat you like this, it has severe consequences. Also, let me know if you guys have any advice for dealing with this, I’m so effing tired. Thanks for reading, I know this was a long one!

2021.12.05 18:33 yeppers145 [Discussion] What’s the game that got you into trophy hunting?

For me personally, it was the Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy. Those games were incredibly infuriating yet so fun, that once I beat the story, I was looking for more out of the games. I ended up going after the plat, and those plats are still among the hardest plats I have, especially the first one.
From there, the rest is history, as I have been an avid trophy hunter ever since.

2021.12.05 18:33 HarrBathtub My school no longer economics, but next year there will be a class of year 13’s still doing it. I have a few questions.

1 - Would my school ever even consider letting me take it, and self teaching the first year and then joining in on the second? I am a straight 9/8 GCSE student, so I feel like that would work in my favour.
2 - Let’s say that hypothetically they do let me do it, do you think I would be able to do it? Like learn 2 years of content in 1 year?
-Soz if that’s a odd question, but worth an ask!

2021.12.05 18:33 FloraNL Is Invisalign improving your jaw line?

I've got an overjet, deep bite and overbite (bingo!), my ortho says only the overbite cannot be fixed because my jaw can only be moved by surgery, which I'm not gonna do. I'm starting Invisalign in a couple days and I've already accepted that my chin will always be a bit small and backward. Still, I've seen some posts on here from other people fixing their bites and sometimes it seems that their jawline does improve with their Invisalign treatment.
To all people with similar bite issues, is your jawline improving?

2021.12.05 18:33 ArturJD96 How does the setter work when there is nothing to set.

Dear keen helpers, be appreciated for ever and ever.
I have defined object 'myObject' with a setter 'setter'. Later on, during testing I wrote the following code:

myObject.setter;
First I though that it will work like that:
myObject.setter = undefined;
but it does simply nothing.
...Or does it? Here is my question. Why are those two setters different? Is it safe to assume that nobody ever is going to write it without '='? Is it even safer and that always does nothing?
It is important for me because sometimes I want to pass a 'undefined' to a setter and I don't won't that to happen accidentally and pass 'undefined' to the setter of my object if I leave the setter alone (might happen because of the typo).
Thank you! I'll appreciate the both simple and complex explanations.
